What to Expect
Every kid is different. Some are excited, some are wary, some just want to know how long it will take. Here is generally how a kids' visit goes:
- Arrive a few minutes early. Let your child see the shop, watch what is happening, and warm up before they sit in the chair.
- The consultation. We talk to the parent and to the kid, depending on age. Older kids usually know what they want; younger kids usually need their parent to translate.
- The cut. We work efficiently but not rushed. We talk to the kid, ask about school, ask about whatever they brought with them. Kids relax when you treat them like people.
- The reward. Most kids leave with a small treat (parent-approved). We try to make the end of the appointment something to look forward to.
First Haircut Tips
A child's first haircut is a milestone, and it can go great or it can be a memorable disaster depending on a few small choices. From years of doing first haircuts, here is what works:
- Pick a calm time of day. Mornings are usually better than after a long day. Naps, snacks, and a calm baseline help enormously.
- Bring a comfort item. A favorite stuffed animal, a small toy, or a tablet with a familiar show. Whatever distracts them is fair game.
- Sit with them if needed. For very young children, sitting in your lap in the chair is often the easiest way. We are completely comfortable with that.
- Set expectations low for the first one. A first haircut does not have to be a perfect haircut. It has to be a positive experience. We can refine the look at the next visit.
- Praise, do not lecture. Kids feed off your energy. If you are calm, they are calmer. If you tell them "do not cry," they often will. If you tell them "you are doing great," they often believe you.
The American Academy of Pediatrics talks generally about new experiences for young children — prep, calm energy, and follow-through — and that guidance applies neatly to the first barbershop visit.
Popular Kids' Cuts
- The Classic Boys' Cut — short and tidy on the sides, a little longer on top. Easy to maintain, works for every age.
- Short Fade with Length on Top — a popular choice for older boys who want a modern look. Pairs with most schools' dress codes.
- Buzz Cut — uniform short. Easy for active kids and for summer.
- Crew Cut — short on the sides, slightly longer on top. A classic that flatters most face shapes.
- Textured Crop — popular with tweens and teens. Modern, easy to style with a little product.
- Long with a Trim — for kids growing their hair out, a regular cleanup keeps it healthy without changing the length.
- Mohawk or Faux-Hawk — for the bolder kids. We can do a real one or a faux version that still passes at school.
Ages We See
We work with every age from first haircut through teenager:
- Toddlers and Pre-K (1-4) — patience-first. We use distraction, soft voices, and sometimes a parent's lap. The goal is a positive experience.
- Elementary (5-10) — usually the easiest age. Kids this age are curious and cooperative, and they often pick a style they want to keep for a while.
- Tweens (11-13) — opinions start to matter more. We listen to the kid as much as the parent.
- Teens (14+) — full consultation with the teen. They know what they want; we deliver it.
Booking with Kids in Mind
Booking ahead is helpful with kids — less time waiting, less time for nerves to build. Tell us when you book if it is a first haircut so we can leave a little extra time in the chair. Walk-ins are welcome too, but the wait can be unpredictable, and that is harder for younger children.
